After three years of delays, the AmeriTies South LLC plant is under construction on U. S. Hwy. 278, west of Hope and officials there hope to begin production by the end of the year.
AmeriTies will produce treated crossties for railroad lines.
Wesley Woodard, president of the Hempstead County Economic Development Corporation, stated that AmeriTies chose to locate in Hope due to its proximity to several sawmills that will provide the plant with hardwood, a railroad branch line that is owned and operated by the Union-Pacific Railroad, and an ample amount of land that was available.
AmeriTies purchased the former Cal-Maine property in the Hope Industrial Park.
Once the construction is completed, the plant will employ 20 workers, with plans to hire 15 more employees over the next 24 months.
Woodard stated that AmeriTies overcame several obstacles during the past three years in an effort to construct the plant. He explained that the first hurdle was “working out” an agreement with Union-Pacific. Then, Mother Nature delayed the construction by delivering an excessive amount of rain in the area.
Construction crews had to wait until the work site dried out before moving their heavy equipment to the location. After the land dried, a second series of soil tests had to be completed before construction could begin.
Now, progress is being made on a daily basis and officials from AmeriTies hope production will begin by the end of the year, Woodard said.
