Blevins Hornets take on Poyen in conference play

POYEN - The Blevins senior and junior high Hornets basketball teams battled the Poyen Indians on the road for hoop action, but would fall short in victories.

In senior high boys action, the Hornets were in command for the first half, but a big run by the Indians in the second half brought Poyen back into the game to edge off Blevins for a heartbreaking defeat.

In first quarter action, the Hornets jumped out to a 14-6 lead over the Indians. In the second quarter, the Hornets continued to keep their lead, but the Indians chopped their way back and trailed Blevins at halftime, 33-29.

In the third quarter, the Indians would build momentum and out-scored the Hornets, 17-8 and Blevins trailed Poyen at the close of the quarter, 46-41.

In the fourth, the Hornets marched their way back to out-score the Indians, 16-12, but Poyen would squeeze by a Blevins for a one point victory, 58-57.

In the game, Jalen Turner led scoring in double-figures with 21 points, Vance Williamson 12 points, Quintin Fields 10 points, Chris Pine six points, Antonio Finlay and Shantel Staggers had four points a piece.

In junior boys action, the Hornets would trailed early in the opening quarter to Poyen, 10-7. In the second quarter, Poyen maintained the advantage to out-score the Hornets and led at halftime, 23-7. In the second quarter, the Hornets fought back and out-scored Poyen 13-11, but trailed at the close of the quarter, 34-20. In the fourth, Poyen kept their lead and went on to defeat the Hornets, 40-24.

In the game, for Blevins, Anfernee Johnson led scoring in double-figures with 12 points, Trevon Stevenson had five points, Quez Lloyd three points, Alec Vanfossen and John Allen each scored two points a piece.

In the Lockesburg Junior High Winter Invitational basketball tournament, the Hornets defeated Wickes, 46-40.

In the game, Javar Jordan led the Hornets scoring in double-figures with 17 points, Quez Lloyd had 11 points, Christian Dougan scored six points, Trevon Stevenson and David Scott four points, with Alec Vanfossen added two points.
