The Hope Bobcats baseball team got to begin their play on diamond Monday night hosting Bradley Bears for their season opener at home at Legion Field. The Bobcats were originally scheduled to battle on the road at Bradley, but game was moved to Hope for non-conference baseball action. The Cats had an early spark in first inning play, but the Bears came away with eight runs total through the fifth as Hope fell short to Bradley, 13-2.
The Bears scored five runs in the first with Hope accounting for two runs to only have a three run deficit going into the second inning. Bradley sparked for seven runs in the second and one run in the third. Despite the Cats falling short to score after the first inning, Bradley was held scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings of play.
For the game, behind the plate at bat, Nate Carter recorded one hit with an RBI and Eder Gonzales and Hunter Hellums each scored a run for the Cats.
At the mound, Zachary Fields pitched 3.2 innings and Kobe Watson 1.1 innings and Gonzales saw action as well during game competition. Field struck out seven batters, one run and no walks. Watson struck out one batter, walked two and four hits with Gonzales two walks and two hits.
Hellums recorded one stolen base against Bradley.
This weekend, the Bobcats are scheduled to compete and host their Bobcat Baseball Tournament Classic March 1-3 at Legion Field in Fair Park. Due to earlier week inclement weather conditions, the tournament may possibly be postponed or rescheduled.
Next week, the Diamond Bobcats are scheduled to play Monday March 5 against Mineral Springs and begin 5A South Conference play Tuesday March 6 on the road against De Queen and Friday March 9 at Magnolia. On next weekend, the Diamond Bobcats are scheduled for tournament competition in Little Rock March 10 hosted at LR Mills. Hope's next home match-up is March 12 hosting Little Rock MeClellan at Legion Field.
