The ranked Spring Hill Lady Bears are headed back to the Class 2A State Girls Basketball Tournament as the No. 2 seed after finishing runner-ups to Caddo Hills in the 2A South Girls Regional Tournament championship game over the weekend at Jerry and Ouida Newton Arena in Poyen.

The ranked Spring Hill Lady Bears are headed back to the Class 2A State Girls Basketball Tournament as the No. 2 seed after finishing runner-ups to Caddo Hills in the 2A South Girls Regional Tournament championship game over the weekend at Jerry and Ouida Newton Arena in Poyen.

The Lady Bears prevailed in first round play over Blevins 64-56 that clinch a spot at state. Then, the Lady Bears defeated host regional tourney ranked-team Poyen 53-43 in the semifinals, but coming up short to Caddo Hills 55-45 in the finals. 

Despite falling short to repeat as regional tourney champs, the Lady Bears advance for a consecutive season to the regional finals and continue their streak to qualify to compete in the Class 2A state tournament. 

The Lady Bears will look to take their place in history once again in the postseason as they'll tip-off in the state tournament Friday March 2 at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals against the winner of Westside/Marmaduke. The Class 2A state tournament is scheduled Feb. 28-Mar. 3 hosted at White County Central High School in Judsonia.

Thus far, the Lady Bears are 26-4 overall.

2A SOUTH GIRLS REGIONAL TOURNAMENT 2018

Semifinals

LADY BEARS 53, POYEN 43

The Lady Bears faced off against a tough and ranked-team of Poyen in the semifinals at regionals. The Lady Bears trailed at the end of first period play 15-14 to Poyen. In the second, the Lady Bears posted 11 points, but Poyen dropped 14 points to lead Spring Hill 29-25 at the break. In the second half, the Lady Bears stepped up effectively on the defensive end to hold Poyen under double-digits in both third and fourth periods for 14 points scored total.

The Lady Bears totaled for 28 points scored in the second half with 15 points in the third and 13 points posted in the fourth period to top Poyen for the 10 point victory to advance to the regional finals. For the game, Lady Bears' Katie Rivera led scoring with a impressive 21 points and went 13-for-15 at the free-throw line for double-figures. Momoka "Momo" Maeda followed with a strong eight points in victory for Spring Hill.

Championship Game

LADY BEARS 45, CADDO HILLS 55

In the regional finals, the Lady Bears faced another ranked-team of Caddo Hills Lady Indians. The Lady Bears had a difficult first half deficit to overcome with Caddo Hills taking double-digit halftime lead over Spring Hill 32-20. Caddo Hills outscored the Lady Bears 22-9 at the end of first quarter period that was a difference factor in the game.

The Lady Bears outscored Caddo Hills in the second quarter 11-10, but the reigning regional champs' Spring Hill trailed at the break. 

In the second half, the Lady Bears posted in double-digits to outscore Caddo Hills 25-23 for third and fourth quarters combine, but the Lady Indians prevailed to post the 10-point win and earning the No. 1 seed from the South at state with Spring Hill taking the No. 2 seed. For the game, Lady Bears' Nika Carstens led scoring with 12 points for the only player in double-figures. Christy Randle followed with nine points and Rivera finished with eight points.
