The Blevins Hornets secured an impressive victory to defeat the host tourney team Bradley Bears 57-49 in the senior boys championship game of the 2018 Southwest Arkansas Shootout in Bradley last Saturday.

The Hornets would trail early, but not long in first period action with the Bears jumping out to an 5-0 lead down to the 6:40 mark in first quarter play. Hornets' Deandre Burton got Blevins on the board at the 5:48 mark, but later the Bears to an 7-4 lead advantage. Blevins' big man and scoring machine Zane Kirkham scored in the paint and Burton drained an 3-pointer gave the Hornets their first lead of the game at the 3:35 mark 9-7. Kirkham finished out the quarter scoring the next two baskets for Blevins and the Hornets ended first period play leading Bradley, 13-9.

In the second quarter, Bradley posted the first basket to cut their deficit to 13-11. Hornets' Cameron Lane showcased two back to back shake-n-bake moves to the baskets to score a couple of buckets and Blevins had their biggest lead margin of the game, 18-13 down to the 5:40 mark. Bradley completed a three-point play and connected on the free-throw that cut Blevins' lead to two points, 18-16.

Ernan Gomez split a pair of free-throws, then Monterian Todd, Kirkham and Dylan Fulton all posted scoring contributions to extend back the Hornets lead 24-16 down to the 2:19 mark. Bradley closed in on their gap and trailed Blevins 24-22 with under a minute left to play in the first half. In the closing seconds, Bradley drained a trifecta from behind the arc to take the lead with momentum going into the locker room at the break leading Blevins, 25-24.

In the third, the Hornets regrouped and outscored Bradley 18-14 with Blevins taking an 42-39 lead after three periods of action. In the fourth, Bradley cut their deficit to one point 42-41, but the Hornets answered with Burton and Lane accounting buckets to extend the Blevins lead 48-41 at the 6:03 mark. Bradley would make one final run that cut their deficit to two points 51-49, despite Gomez draining a trey for Blevins during the Bears run.

Hornets' point guard Corta Young took over and scored the final six points of the game and made two trips to the foul line connecting on both pair of free-throws in the closing seconds of the championship game. Bradley was held without a basket in the final 1:30 minutes of the game and the Hornets went onto an eight point win to capture the tournament title as the 2018 Southwest Arkansas Shootout Champions.

For the game, Hornets' Lane led scoring with 15 points, Burton had 13 points, Kirkham and Young each added 10 points for a quality core of double-figure scorers. Gomez scored six points, Todd had two points and Fulton chipped in one point from the charity stripe.

For Bradley, AJ Taylor led scoring with 19 points, Jayden Riley had 13 points and DeRoderick Florence finished with 10 points for a trio of double-figures.

The win put the Blevins Hornets at 21-6 overall.
