For several consecutive seasons, the hometown Hope Bobcats will travel to the big state of Texas during the Christmas holiday break to compete in the tourney competition in Paris, Texas. The Bobcats are set to return to the 8th Annual Guaranty Bank Paris Holiday Basketball Tournament scheduled Dec. 28-30.

The Bobcats have performed well against the basketball talent on the Texas side during their years of competing in the Paris, Texas tourney.

The hometown Hope Bobcats along the Spa City hoopsters of Hot Springs will be the two schools to represent the Natural State to showcase a little taste of competition style from Arkansas in Texas.

Last year, the Bobcats advanced to the semifinals, but fell short to finish out competition competing for third place in the championship bracket of the tournament. The Cats went into cruise control to open tournament play to go unbeaten in pool play at 3-0 for the first day of competition. For day two, the Cats finished strong to top Teague in the quarterfinals, but came up short to Mt. Pleasant in semifinals. Hope would battle Waxachachie Life for the third place game on the final day of tournament play, but for an intense match-up, the Cats fell to Waxachachie Life to finish fourth place overall in tourney competition.

This season the Bobcats have gotten off into a tough start to begin the 2017-18 basketball season. Despite facing some early stiff competition on the hardwood, the Bobcats have captured a few key wins to break into the win column including a victory during tournament play in New Boston, Texas earlier this month.

Veteran head coach Samuel Bradford has been pleased by the production from the Cats for the early part of the season. Even though the Cats have fell short of wins against some of the state's best talented teams, Bradford knows this year's group of Bobcats continues to build team chemistry and still getting used to one another.

With a successful senior group leaving last season that helped the Bobcats capture the 5A South Conference Tournament title and the No. 1 seed into the Class 5A state tourney, Bradford expects to get everyone's best with this new group of Cats to compete. But, Bradford knows the first half of the season is to help prepare his troops to be ready for a challenging second half season scheduled that includes league play to contend to make the state tournament.

After the Cats competed in the Gunslinger tournament in New Boston, Texas Bradford commented about how Hope's senior high boys team performed to finish 1-2 in tourney play and looking to finish out the remaining games going into the Christmas break.

"We're maturing, just not as a basketball team right now. But every game we play, there has been growth. We're struggling to score on the offensive end right now, but scored better on Saturday against a good Liberty-Eylau team. Our competition has been stiff up to this point, but we need to continue to grow," Bradford said.

"We've won three games so far and been at this point last year and won 21 games. We're just going to take it one game at a time. We got about 26 players and they're new and we're still in the evaluating process, but our kids have shown up and done what we've asked then to do and do what we need them to do," Bradford said.

The Bobcats will head into Paris tournament play facing Lufkin Hudson at 1 p.m., then face Commerce at 8 p.m. in first day competition on Thursday Dec. 28 in pool play at the Aux Gymnasium in Paris, Texas. The Bobcats conclude pool play on Friday Dec. 29 facing Mt. Pleasant at 8 a.m. and Hot Springs takes on New Boston at 9:30 p.m. Bracket competition will take place on Friday Dec. 29 following pool play games.

Thus far, the Bobcats enter into tournament play 2-5 overall.
