The Blevins Hornets provided two high scoring affairs in battle on the hardwood for senior high boys basketball competition this week. The Hornets took care of business at home on Monday night topping the Murfreesboro Rattlers 79-33 to remain unbeaten at on their home court at the Imon G. Brown Gymnasium.

Then on Tuesday night, the Hornets headed on the road for a competitive battle against the England Lions but fell short 77-74 in a high scoring affair.

The Hornets finish the first half of the 2017-18 basketball season at 15-4 overall and showcasing some early season success with head coach Scott Kelton pleased by their production thus far into the season.

Kelton believes guys have stepped up and very proud how they rallied themselves back from a double-digit deficit to England with their team's second leading scorer [Deandre Burton] out against a state tourney contender on the road. Zane Kirkham keeps the spark rolling to post two big 20 plus point scoring games back to back dropping 25 pts. against Murfreesboro and 28 points facing England.

The Hornets will be off from action until January 3, 2018 to face Foreman on the road, then return home on January 4, 2018 hosting Hempstead County rivals' Spring Hill to conclude their season series meetings at the Imon G. Brown Gymnasium.

HORNETS 79, MURFREESBORO 33

In Monday home contest at the Imon G. Brown Gymnasium in Blevins, the Hornets jumped out to a dominating 16-2 lead over the Rattlers. Deandre Burton, Corta Young and big mad Zane Kirkham all provided the scoring for the Hornets in the early three minutes of play. The Rattlers stopped the Hornets' run with a basket at the 4:52 mark. Burton answered with a basket, Kirkham split a pair of free-throws with a basket as well and Young to extend Blevins lead to 23-4 down to the 3:23 mark. Murfreesboro nailed a three-pointer to cut Blevins lead 23-7 at the 3:01 mark. Monterian Todd came in to added a bucket for the Hornets, then knocked down a pair of free-throws with a basket and Cameron Lane scoring the final basket of the first quarter for Blevins under a minute. Murfreesboro closed out the first quarter scoring a basket with five seconds, but the Hornets maintain an 32-15 lead over the Rattlers going into the second quarter.

In the second, Burton opened the period draining a trey from behind the arc to extend the Hornets' lead to 35-15 at the 7:30 mark. Dylan Fulton and Young added to the Hornets lead with a couple of buckets to bring their lead to 38-15 down to the 6:38 mark. For the next four minutes of play Murfeesboro was allowed four points scored, but Hornets' Ernan Gomez, Todd and Kirkham all contributed points from the field that put Blevins up 43-20. From this point, the Rattlers finished the first half scoring four points. The Hornets added 12 points scored for the final three minutes of play in the second quarter. Kobe Steed and Burton both knocked down trey's from behind the arc. Lane and Steed each scored from the field and Kirkham split a pair of free-throws that led to Blevins maintaining a 57-24 advantage over Murfreesboro at the break.

In the third quarter, the Hornets outscored the Rattlers 13-2. At the end of three quarters, Blevins led Murfreesboro, 70-26. In the fourth, the clock ran continuously with the Hornets adding nine points to the board and the Rattlers managing seven points to finish out the contest. Fulton had a bucket in the fourth, Todd added three points and Steed led the way accounting four points scored for fourth period scoring. For the game, Hornets' Kirkham led scorers with an impressive 25 points, Burton dropped 15 points nailing three trifecta's from behind the arc and Todd finished with 11 points for a triple threat of double-digit scorers.

HORNETS 74, ENGLAND 77

The Blevins Hornets took their talents on the road Tuesday night for back to back days of hoop action to England to face off against a good Lions club for the final game before taking off for the Christmas holiday break. It was a long road trip for the Hornets which showed early in their match-up against the Lions. Blevins trailed early in first quarter play 28-15 with the Lions maintaining the 13 point advantage heading into the second quarter.

The Hornets sparked and rallied themselves back and outscored the Lions 19-14. At halftime, the Hornets trailed England 42-34. In the second half, the Hornets stepped up their level of play dropped 40 points on the scoreboard to get themselves back into the game to outscored England who scored 35 points total for third and four quarters combined. Both Blevins and England scored 17 points in the third quarter, with the Hornets accounting 23 points in the fourth and the Lions posting 18 in the finale period that led them to their three point win over visiting Blevins.

For the game, Kirkham led scoring with dynamic performance to pace Blevins with 28 points, Lane posted 15 points and Gomez finished with 11 points and Todd added 10 points for a four-player double-figure contribution and Fulton adding three points.
