It was another intense, physical and fierce match-up on the hardwood in the reunion between the Spring Hill Lady Bears hosting the Blevins Lady Hornets in the first of their two game season series for the "Battle of Hempstead County" on Tuesday night at Spring Hill Gymnasium.

It was another intense, physical and fierce match-up on the hardwood in the reunion between the Spring Hill Lady Bears hosting the Blevins Lady Hornets in the first of their two game season series for the "Battle of Hempstead County" on Tuesday night at Spring Hill Gymnasium.

Both teams came into their game with winning momentum from victories before the Thanksgiving holiday break. The Lady Bears had been on the road for the their first four games of the season and finally returned home for their season home-opener hosting their short distance rivals' Blevins in a rematch from last year's 2A South Regional Championship game.

The game was close through the entire match-up, but in the end the Lady Bears prevailed for an 60-51 win and ended Blevins Lady Hornets eight game winning-streak.

In first quarter action, the Lady Hornets had the early spark as Diana Samuel drained an three-pointer to put Blevins up 3-0 with Jasmine Batson splitting a pair of free-throws at the 6:56 mark gave the visiting team Blevins an 4-0 lead. Christy Randle got the Lady Bears on the scoreboard at the 5:11 mark to cut their deficit at 4-2.

After this point, the game started to build up with physical play and intensity, but the Lady Hornets maintain the early advantage to take a slim 9-6 lead under the 3:00 mark. Spring Hill and Blevins would trade baskets from this point with Lady Hornets' Amani Furlow knocking down two trifecta's from behind the arc, but Lady Bears' Katie Rivera swished a trey as well and Momoka "Momo" Maeda went coast to coast to for a lay-up to score in the closing seconds of opening quarter action. At the end of first period play, Blevins led Spring Hill 15-13.

In the second, Blevins extended their lead to 17-13 with Batson scoring the quarter's first basket at the 7:41, then later put the Lady Hornets back up by four at the 6:42 mark 19-15. Lady Hornets' Camri Kirkham made a pair of free-throws and Furlow split two at the foul line to give Blevins their biggest lead of the game 22-15 at the 5:01 mark. Then Furlow completed a three-point play to extend the Lady Hornet's lead to 10 points for double-digits 25-15 at the 4:52 mark. After a key time out by Spring Hill, the Lady Bears came out with improved production.

Senior Maegan Ward sparked the Lady Bears' run by swishing a trey from behind the arc, then Rivera completed a three-point play of her own with a basket from the field and Randle made a couple of free-throws to give Spring Hill an 27-25 lead at the 2:12 mark. In the final two minutes of play in the first half, Batson split a pair of free-throws for Blevins final scoring of the half. Rivera contributed to another basket and Maeda finished the half with a basket at the buzzer to extend the Lady Bears lead. At halftime, Spring Hill led Blevins, 31-26.

In the second half, the Lady Bears continued to have the momentum and out-scored the Lady Hornets 15-13 in the third quarter. After three periods of action, the Lady Bears led Blevins 46-39.

In the fourth, the Lady Hornets went on a run to cut their deficit with Batson and Furlow contributing to scoring and Blevins trailed Springs Hill 46-42 at the 5:15 mark. The Lady Bears got a key three-pointer made by Maleigh Moore to push Spring Hill's lead up to 49-42 at the 4:09 mark. Batson split a pair of free-throws and Kirkham scored from the field cut their deficit back to four points of Spring Hill's lead 51-47 coming up on the 2:00 mark left to play in the contest.

Later, the Lady Hornets would continue to stay in striking distance with Batson scoring her final basket of the game to cut Spring Hill's lead down to three points, 52-49 at the 1:29 mark. The Lady Bears kept making key plays down the stretch as Randle and Rivera took pace and control of scoring to give the Lady Bears the 58-49 lead under a minute to play in the game. Furlow knocked down two free-throws for Blevins' finals points scored and Ward put the finishing touch on the game for Spring Hill at the foul line connecting on both shots from the charity stripe to secure the nine point victory for the Lady Bears to take game one of their two game season series meeting.

For the game, Lady Hornets' Furlow led scoring for Blevins with 18 points and Batson dropped 14 points for double-figures. Samuel finished with six points swishing two trey's, Madison Hall and Kirkham each had four points apiece and Bailey Hall added three points.

For the Lady Bears' Rivera led all scorers with an impressive 22 points for the lone player in double-figures for Spring Hill. Jessi Park followed with nine points with seven scored in third quarter play. Randle scored eight points, Ward had seven points, Maeda contributed six points, Graycee Barham added four points and Moore finished with three points.

The win put the Lady Bears at 3-2 overall for back to back victories. For the Lady Hornets, it marked just their second loss of the season at 9-2 overall.

This Friday Dec.1, the Lady Bears continue action on the road at Dierks and the Lady Hornets travel to Cossatot River to conclude their season series meeting.

The next "Battle of Hempstead County" for Spring Hill and Blevins is set January 5, 2018 to conclude their season series at the Imon G. Brown Gymnasium in Blevins.
