For the nightcap of a three game home stanza at Spring Hill Gymnasium Tuesday night featured the senior high boys match-up between the visiting Blevins Hornets facing the Spring Hill Bears for the first of their two game season series meeting for the "Battle of Hempstead County" showdown on the hardwood.

For the nightcap of a three game home stanza at Spring Hill Gymnasium Tuesday night featured the senior high boys match-up between the visiting Blevins Hornets facing the Spring Hill Bears for the first of their two game season series meeting for the "Battle of Hempstead County" showdown on the hardwood.

Blevins have been the victors in previous match-ups and this season the outcome didn't change as the Hornets rolled to an impressive 72-53 victory over the Bears. Blevins' big man Zane Kirkham displayed another big scoring night the lead all scorers pouring 32 points to break over the 30 point mark multiple times thus far into the season.

The Hornets had the upper edge early in the first quarter, but the Bears stayed close and finished opening period with the one point advantage over Blevins 16-15. Kirkham scored four points, Cameron Lane posted five points and Corta Young contributing a basket accounted for Blevins first period scoring. The Bears received their scoring contributions from Hays Martin draining a trifecta from behind the arc with a basket from the field. Drake Kidd and Wesley Featherston scored a couple of baskets apiece for the Bears scoring production in first quarter action.

In the second, the Hornets regain the lead at the 7:27 mark 17-16 from Kirkham scoring under the basket and connecting on a pair of free-throws at the 7:06 mark to extend the Blevins margin at 19-16. Cam Middleton posted the Bears first points of the second quarter at the 6:45 mark, but a scoring run by the Hornets led by Kirkham, Young and Deandre Burton brought the Blevins lead advantage to 24-18 down to the 3:48 mark. Payton Massanelli stopped the run with a basket, but Lane for Blevins made a couple shots from the foul line to put the Hornets by six points, 26-20.

Later in the second, Burton for Blevins swished two trey's from way behind the arc along Dylan Fulton and Kirkham contributing to scoring points from the field sparked the Hornets production on the hardwood. Martin for the Bears led the scoring surge for Spring Hill with Layne Anderson and Massanelli displaying their production of points scored for the half from the field.

In the closing seconds of the half, Burton's second three-pointer at the buzzer sparked the Hornets momentum going into the locker room to gave them the 42-26 lead over the Bears at the break.

In the second half, the Hornets exploded coming out in third quarter action to drop 20 points on the scoreboard and the Bears held to 10 points but posting in double-digits. At the end of three periods, the Hornets led Spring Hill, 56-36.

In the fourth and final period of action for the night, the Hornets added 16 points scored with the Bears accounting a big 17 points, but Blevins early quarter spark led onto victory to take game one of their two season series meeting.

For the game, Hornets' Burton scored 12 points and Fulton had 11 points with Kirkham for double-figures. Lane and Young each had seven points apiece, Kobe Steed finished with two points and Ernan Gomez chipped in one point.

For the Bears, Martin led scoring with 13 points and Massanelli contributed 10 points for double-figures. Featherson finished with eight points, Kidd scored seven points and Colby Light knocked down six points for Spring Hill.

This Friday night Dec.1, the Bears travel on the road to another tough place for battle at Dierks. For the Hornets, they head to Cossatot River to conclude their season series match-up on the hardwood for senior high boys action.

The next "Battle of Hempstead County" series finale between Spring Hill and Blevins is scheduled January 5, 2018 at the Imon G. Brown Gymnasium in Blevins.
