Coming fresh off their season opening victory at Genoa Central before the Thanksgiving holiday break, the Spring Hill Bears returned to the hardwood Monday night to battle the Bismarck Lions in first round action in the 2017 Magnet Cove tournament.

Coming fresh off their season opening victory at Genoa Central before the Thanksgiving holiday break, the Spring Hill Bears returned to the hardwood Monday night to battle the Bismarck Lions in first round action in the 2017 Magnet Cove tournament. The Bears battled tough with productive play in first half action, but the Lions keyed up down the stretch in the second half to prevail over Spring Hill 62-47.

The first quarter concluded with an even tie 18-18, but in the second Bismarck outscored Spring Hill 13-11. At the break, Bismarck led the Bears 31-29. In the second half, the Bears got outscored 31-18 for third and fourth quarter scoring to result the Lions securing the 15 point victory.

For the game, Bears' Payton Massanelli and Layne Anderson led scoring with 11 points apiece for a duo of double-figures. Drake Kidd followed with eight points and Hays Martin added seven points. Bradey Powell contributed four points, Colby Light scored three points and Wesley Featherston finished with two points.

Spring Hill Bears head basketball coach Tyler Welch was proud of the teams effort and competitive nature in battle, but the second half haunted their production to stay in the game. Welch credited Bismarck’s defense and the Lions ability to knock down clutch free-throws, but the Bears slow start in the second half made the difference.

The Bears will return to tournament play at Magnet Cove Wednesday Nov.29 at 5:30 p.m. facing the loser of Cutter Morning Star vs. Glen Rose game from previous tourney action.
