One of the biggest steps for the Hempstead County Connected Communities initiative recently took place, according to UACCH Director of Telecommunications Dave Phillips. They recently received a donation 60 to 80 used computers, from the School of Math and Science in Hot Springs, to forward the idea of broad band and internet use within the county.
Dave Phillips has hoped for the possibility of refurbishing older computers for many types of technological advancement.
Phillips is making plans to have volunteers and students investigate which computers can be refurbished and updated as much as possible into usable and productive machines.
Phillips and the Connected Communities organization hopes to donate some to local organizations such as fire departments, the Christian Medical Clinic, and other area-non-profit organizations. He hopes they will eventually be used for senior citizens to learn about using computers and internet, and needy families that may have students with no home access to a computer.
“I am pleased that the donation of these computers to approved organizations will help these computers to continue to serve families here in the community. I am hopeful that with additional donations of computers and hardware to the Hempstead County Connected Communities Organization from individuals and businesses,” Phillips said.
