Hope residents were reminded how hot and dry it has been in the Hempstead County Friday afternoon as members of the Hope Fire Department were called to battle a grass from on Bill Clinton Bypass.
Around 3:45 p.m. the Hope Fire Department was notified about a grass fire that was burning between the railroad tracks and Hervey Street on Hwy 278.
Two trucks were dispatched to contain the blaze before any damage was done to local businesses in the area. Traffic, however, was stopped on the interstate because smoke was causing visibility problems for motorist.
According to Hope Fire Chief Bo Watkins, a motorist reported witnessing a vehicle pulling a boat trailer start the fire. Watkins said that it is thought the trailer wheel bearings dried out and started sparking, causing the fire.
Hempstead County is under a burn ban, and all outdoor burning is prohibited.
