A family fun day, a barbecue contest and more will be new at this year's Hempstead County Fair which opens Sept. 8.
“This year’s county fair, held at Hope Fair Park, is going to bigger and better than ever,” Fair spokesperson Stephanie Buckley said.
Buckley said, for years, fair participants, their families and volunteers throughout the county have prepared feverishly the first week of September.
“They groom livestock and finish projects for the most wholesome event in the county. Parents, leaders and teachers work endless hours with the kids, entering their arts and craft projects, feeding and grooming their livestock just right in the hopes of winning the coveted blue ribbon,” Buckley said.
In addition to the livestock and arts and crafts show that starts on Wednesday, there will be a barbecue cook-off, Southwest High School Rodeo rodeo, and a family fun day on Saturday, Sept. 11, providing something for the whole family to enjoy, according to Fair President Don Honea.
“There is a lot of excitement and interest in it this year, and we hope it will be a big success,”  Honea  said.
Family Fun Day activities include a combine simulator, art tent where kids get creative, children’s games, opportunity to learn how to milk a cow, hands on quilting, as well as a chance to learn a historical dance from the 1860s.  “There will even be a few cowboys on hand teaching the kids to rope,” Buckley said.
Honea said another new event is the Lions's Club Fish Fry to raise money for Relay for Life. It will take place on Sept. 9, from 4:30 -7 p.m.
“The is the first time they have been at the county fair,” Honea said.
He said plates from the barbecue cook off will also be available that include chicken, baked beans and a baked potato. The Cowboy Church will  also have a special rodeo.
“We invite everyone to come out to Hope Fair Park to take part in an event that puts the culture back in agriculture,” Buckley added.
