Hansford J. Long
HOPE--Hansford J. Long, Sr., 70, died Thursday, July 14, 2011, at a Texarkana hospital.
He was the son of Samuel Monroe and Willie Bradley Long, and was born in McCaskill, on October 28, 1940.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Jeanell and Mary Ann Long.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mary’lin Reece Long; one son, Hansford Jerry Long, Jr., of Hope; one daughter, Mary Ann Long Willmon and Willard, of Hope; five grandchildren, Andrew Miles Long and Casey, of Mena, Andrea Michele Long and Charles Coleman, of Raywood, Texas, Corrie Faris, of Hope, Nathalie Adeline “Addey” Willmon, of Hope, and Emily Willmon Hamilton and David, of Hope; one brother, Henry Allen Long and Marie of St. Bernard, La.; three nephews, Dr. Hank Long, Jr. and Suzanne of Monroe, La., Jerry Wayne Long and Leslie of Washington State, and Dr. and Mrs. Keith Long, of California; one step sister, Allene Hill of Emmet; one step brother, Doyle Ferguson of Prescott; two step sister-in-laws, Mary and Glenda Ferguson; and his three beloved pets, Burger, Chico and Maxwell Smart.
He was a Hope city policeman for eight years, a Hope city fireman for eight years and was an Arkansas State Highway Policeman for 24 years, many of those years he served as a Sergeant. In his earlier life, he served his country in the U. S. Army in the U. S. and Germany.
During his 40 years in police work, he also worked as a master plumber, a licensed funeral director and a mason. He was a proud member of Unity Baptist Church which he loved.
He loved his wife and family, enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren, cooking special meals for his family and friends, mowing and taking care of his yard and garden. He also enjoyed mowing the BancorpSouth house lawn which he did part time for many years, and playing with his beloved dogs.
He enjoyed sitting on the front porch and looking at the pond. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, neighbor and friend and will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be Tuesday, July 19, at Herndon-Pharr Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 20, at 10 a.m. in the Herndon-Pharr Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Glen Tropp officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Herndon-Pharr Funeral Home.
