A 12-year old Guernsey boy was killed Sunday afternoon as the result of a an ATV accident.

Hempstead County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy James Singleton said this morning that Guernsey and Cross Roads first responders, as well as a Hempstead County Sheriff’s deputy, responded to a call in reference to an unresponsive child injured in an ATV accident Sunday afternoon.
Singleton said that at approximately 12:45 p.m., Hempstead County Deputy Jerry Crider was dispatched to 4761 Hempstead County Road 2 in reference to the accident.

He said when Crider arrived, the child’s father, Christopher Malone, was administering CPR to the young child, whom the father identified as his son, Garrett Malone, 12.
“Deputy Crider assisted in administering CPR until arrival of both first responder units and Pafford EMS,” Singleton said.

Garrett Malone was airlifted from the scene to Christus St. Michael Hospital in Texarkana, where he later died, Singleton said.
Christopher Malone told Deputy Crider that Garrett had been riding the ATV, which was described as a 2005 Polaris 500, around a barn, which was located approximately 75 yards from their home.

“Garrett’s 14-year-old brother told Deputy Crider that he was taking out the trash and went to look for him because he had been outside for about 30 minutes,” Singleton said. “He found the ATV upside down on top of his brother and ran back to tell his dad what he had found.”
Singleton said Christopher Malone ran to his son and saw him lying under the ATV and he picked up the 4-wheeler off his son and began CPR until Deputy Crider allowed.
Funeral services are pending with Brazzel/Oakcrest of Hope.
