He welded the first joist at then SMI Joist ,that was ever welded, and the last one that will ever be welded in the company as it was known to be as CMC Joist and Deck, Arkansas, according to company employee, Laranda Clayton said. “ As of today, he welded the last joist this company will ever make,” Clayton said on Friday, June 18, the last production day for CMC.“ We just laughed about it. We thought it was kind of peculiar. What is the chance of me making it through and welding on the last joist?,” Morman said. Max Morman, a company employee for 26 years posed for a picture with friend and co-worker Dennis Lagrone to represent the milestone.
“ It was just kind of funny. When we started I was a welder and when we welded the first joist then I went to shipping and was in shipping for about 15 years. When the economy started slowing down I went back into the plant welding because they were not shipping as much. Then I lasted through all the lay offs to the very end, so I ended up welding on the last one,” Morman said.
Lagrone worked on the first Tex-Ark joist and the last CMC Joist. Morman said he had been through several company changes. “ There were a lot of friends that welded on the first one with me that been through several company changes. “ There were a lot of friends that welded on the first one with me that had been laid off,” Morman said.
“ I guess I will just wait. We will have to start over again,” Morman said.
