The annual celebration of Black History Month will begin Feb. 6, with events planned throughout the month, according to Vincent Wesley, president of the Black Historical and Development Society.

“On Feb. 6, our opening night will begin at 6 p.m. at Bethel A.M.E. Church. Our featured speaker will be Superintendent Kenneth Muldrew, and we hope to have a large crowd for our opening night,” Wesley said.
On Feb. 13, the annual Black History Month Parade will begin at 1 p.m. Line-up will begin at 11 a.m. at the old Bud’s Store on East 6th and Laurel streets.

“We don’t have a firm grand marshall at this time, but we hope to announce that shortly,” Wesley said. “We hope to have a bigger and better parade than we did last year, and last year’s parade was one of the biggest in the history of that event.”

On Feb. 20, a youth and musical night will be presented. There will be different community choirs, and youth will perform readings and showcase their talents. The youth and musical night will be held at Straight and Narrow Path Ministries Church in the 500 block of South Elm Street. The public is invited and the program begins at 6 p.m.
On Feb. 27, a banquet will be held at the Hope High School cafeteria, beginning at 6 p.m.

“The guest speaker will be Judge Wendell Griffen,” Wesley said. “Tickets are $15 each and are available from me, Hazel Simpson, or the Rev. French Stroughter, as well as from other members of the society. A portion of the ticket sales will go to Haitian relief.”
