“Well, if you’re ever down in Hope, round about July,
If you ain’t in a hurry, then you oughta stop by,
I can guarantee, that you’re gonna have a ball,
Learning how to do, the Watermelon Crawl...”
The University of Arkansas Community College at Hope put on the first session of Watermelon Crawl Line Dancing Classes on Tuesday night at the UACCH student center and.... yep, there I am in my boots, but they didn’t help me become light on my feet.
This time it wasn’t the bad memories of getting sick on the merry-go-round, but being the last one to learn the cheerleading dance.
There is hope for me, though. I can get down with the rest of them with enough practice; or at least I like to think I can. Of course, for “Family Guy” fans, it could be like the one episode of where Lois and Peter compete in the talent show. In their minds they have it won, but in eyes of the audience there is something to be desired... actually, much to be desired.
But, that was the beauty of it; it is a country music line dance, so you can relax with it a little. We are not in a talent competition, thank God. Another comforting factor: this is usually performed in a country and western dance club in the dark and where unknown amounts of liquor are consumed.
Bettina, my co-worker and friend, came along with me for support, and we decided today that we will have a talk with the teacher, Angie Reeder, about slowing those Dancetastics girls down a bit.
But, we were not the only line dancing students. Paul and Dolly Henley were learning the Watermelon Crawl with the rest of us. John and Kim Hollis, and a few others, were along for the fun.
We didn’t want to go to the Tracy Byrd concert unprepared and you don’t actually “crawl” in the dance, as some people may think; at least not in the version we learned. Although, I do not think I was far from it at first.
“But if you drink don’t drive, do the watermelon crawwwwl.”
It’s a lot of fun, and anybody else who wants to give it a shot can show up for the next session at UACCH tonight from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Student Center. Those who participate in the class will be encouraged to join a group demonstration at the Tracy Byrd concert Saturday at the Hope Watermelon Festival, according to Dolly Henley of the UACCH Insitutional Development Office.
“We are excited that the college could be a part of bringing Tracy Byrd to the Watermelon Festival to perform. It seems only fitting that we be prepared with a few lessons on how to properly do the Watermelon Crawl,” UACCH Vice Chancellor of Academics Jennifer Methvin said.
For more information call 870-722-8102. Cost for classes are one $12 Tracy Byrd concert ticket plus an additional $5. Byrd performs at the Hope Watermelon Festival on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 8:30 p.m. on the new CMC Joist Stage at Hope Fair Park.
