The Hope Public School Board made an amendment Monday night to the Christmas bonus procedure that excluded school district personnel hired after August 15.
The vote was unanimous with the motion made by Denny Dickinson and seconded by Dora Philyaw.
“Our reason is because we have hired folks recently and how you begin to make that judgment is one of the questions we’ve been discussing, so we went back to the first of when school started and decided to set it for that time,” Hope Public Schools Superintendent Kenneth Muldrew said.
The general procedure is $1,000 for teachers and $500 for classified personnel, according to Muldrew. Muldrew did not have a count for the number of people who have been hired after the beginning of the year.
A student expulsion was also addressed with the board expelling one student for the remainder of the school year involving possession of a knife. Muldrew did not give information on whether the student was or was not under 18. Members voted and approved expulsion of the student.
Muldrew said it was a “clean up” because both students involved had not been addressed. Board members said the expulsion of the student was not appealed, it was recommended.
The motion to expel was made by board member Danny Watson and seconded by Jesus Coronado.
Board members were told they will be receiving lap tops and training for school board information, so that many documents may be sent by computer and kept, avoiding a large paper trail.
Three board members will be recognized for Master Boardsmen, meaning 50 hours of professional development. Those members are Dora Philyaw, Mike Beasley, and Virginia Culley. Culley was the selected member to attend ASBA conference Dec. 9-11.
Member Denny Dickinson was recognized and pinned for Outstanding Member for 25 hours of professional development.
