Hope, Ark. -

Unrelated incidents at the extreme ends of Hempstead County have resulted in one man being hospitalized with stab wounds, and his sister arrested; while, a Texas man remains in jail for attempting to fraudulently obtain prescription medication.

A McCaskill man remained in the Howard County Memorial Hospital in Nashville on Tuesday recovering from stab wounds inflicted as the result of an altercation at at McCaskill residence on Monday night, Hempstead County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy James Singleton said.
Singleton said Carey Dean Newman, 38, of 4124 Hwy. 317 in McCaskill, was transported to Howard County Memorial as a result of being stabbed twice by a woman identified as his sister, Kim Renee Hoosier, 45, of the same address.

“Witnesses stated that Newman and his sister, Hoosier, had gotten into a verbal argument which escalated into a physical altercation resulting in Newman being stabbed,” he said. “We recovered a sharp object at the scene, but it is yet to be determined if that is the weapon.”
Singleton did not identify the object believed to have been used in the attack, but said that Newman was treated in Nashville for two stab wounds to the back.

He said the argument apparently began inside the residence and was carried out onto the front lawn about 9 p.m. Monday. Deputies arriving on the scene found Newman, and he was taken to Nashville by Pafford Emergency Services.
Singleton said Hoosier was arrested at the scene and transported to the Hempstead County Detention Center under an allegation of first degree domestic battery. He said she has not yet made an initial court appearance, and no bond has been set.

A motive for the dispute has yet to be established, and the attack remains under investigation, Singleton said.
HCSO deputies arrested a Texarkana, Texas, man on Friday in connection with an alleged series of incidents in which prescription medications have been fraudulently obtained, Singleton said.

David Randall Terrell, 28, of Texarkana, Texas, was arrested Friday by HCSO officers in cooperation with officers of the South Central Drug Task Force as the result of an investigation which began with a telephone call to a local pharmacy.

Singleton did not identify the pharmacy involved, but said an alleged accomplice of Terrell’s sought to have hydrocodone sold to Terrell under a false prescription.
“Apparently, this was called in by someone portraying himself to be a medical doctor,” Singleton said. He said two local pharmacies were contacted on Friday.

“He tried this at at least three pharmacies here in Hope,” Singleton said.
He said once a prescription was ordered, Terrell allegedly was sent to purchase the medication. Singleton said Terrell was arrested in a traffic stop in Hope after making such a purchase.

Terrell remains in the Hempstead County Detention Center under $25,000 bond, set by Eighth Judicial District-North Circuit Judge William Randall Wright, on a charge of three counts of fraud, Singleton said.
He said the case remains under investigation to determine whether it is part of an organized criminal effort.

“Right now, this does not appear to be more extensively organized,” Singleton said. “From time to time, we get notification from local pharmacies that someone may be trying to obtain prescription drugs illegally.”
