Three contested races have officially formed as the filing period for the May 18 primary election season in Hempstead County entered its final three days Thursday.

In the election for Eighth Judicial District-North Prosecuting Attorney, incumbent Ashley Parker is ineligible to seek re-election, having been appointed to the office to fill the unexpired term of former prosecutor Chris Thomason.

Eighth Judicial District-North Chief Deputy Prosecutor Christi McQueen, a Nevada County native and long time Hempstead County resident, and Little Rock attorney John Collins have both filed the $7,500 candidate fee with the Arkansas Democrat Party to seek election as a Democrat in the prosecutor's race.

McQueen has emphasized her local roots and prosecutorial experience since beginning legal practice in 1981, while Collins has emphasized his police background in Texas and service in the Garland County Prosecutor's Office after entering legal practice in Arkansas.

All but one county filing was in the Democrat primary in Hempstead County.

Hempstead County Chief Deputy Circuit Clerk Gail Wolfenbarger and Hempstead County Judge's Administrative Assistant Anita Tompkins have paid local filing fees in the election for circuit clerk. Both are first-time candidates for political office.

Wolfenbarger has emphasized her role in upgrading the technology in the circuit clerk's office alongside retiring Hempstead County Circuit Clerk Carolyn Neel, who has publicly endorsed Wolfenbarger. Neel leaves office after more than two decades Dec. 31.

Tompkins has emphasized her willingness to bring new ideas to the office, as well as advance the technological resources of the office for the courts.

In the only other locally contested race to date, Nicholas Ward has filed to challenge Hempstead County District 5 JP Olen Dorman, who filed for office Wednesday. Ward ran against Hempstead County District 7 JP Larry Byers in 2004.

Hempstead County Deputy Treasurer Holly Bobo has filed for office to replace incumbent Catherine Rowe, who will move from Hempstead County at the end of her term. Bobo filed for office as a Republican.

Hempstead County Sheriff's Chief Deputy James Singleton has filed for office in place of retiring sheriff Jerry Crane.

Monica Johnson, of Hope, has filed for office in Hempstead County JP District 1.

In State Senate District 21, part of which includes Spring Hill, State Representative Steve Harrelson, of Texarkana, and Foreman businessman Ken Cowling have filed for election. Both filed as Democrats.

Countywide filings in Nevada County to date include a three-way race for county judge between Mark Glass, Todd Prewitt and Nicky McGuire.

No Republicans had filed in Nevada County at press time Thursday.
