Over $3,000 was raised at the “Boots and Badges” fundraiser here this weekend.
Local law enforcement and fire fighters held up boots and buckets in front of local supermarkets to collect money that goes toward the training programs for the Special Olympics.
On Friday and Saturday, different teams from the Hope Police Department, the Arkansas Highway Police, the State Police, the Hempstead County Sheriff's Department and the Hope Fire Department worked to fill their buckets.
Director of fundraising for the event Shelly Yielding said the Special Olympics hold year-round training camps for their participants.
Hope officials participated in this particular fundraiser for the first time. The law enforcement and fire departments in this area also partner for the Guns and Hoses blood drive and other charity events when possible.
“This is the first year Hope has participated, but we have always been involved in the Law Enforcement Torch run,” HPD Chief J. R. Wilson said.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest event for the Special Olympics worldwide, according to Wilson.
