Hempstead County investigators were continuing to piece together the events and context of a shooting between two brothers in the predawn hours Sunday which left one brother in stable condition in a Texarkana hospital.
Hempstead County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy James Singleton said Monday that Danny Franklin King, 43, of Hope, was taken into custody without incident later Sunday after an intensive search stemming from the area of the 700 block of Highway 174 North in Hope.
“At approximately 12:22 a.m. Sunday, Hempstead County deputies responded to a 911 call in the 700 block of Highway 174 North in reference to shots being fired,” Singleton said.
He said officers arriving at the scene found King’s brother, John King, 44, suffering from a gunshot wound to the side.
“Witnesses stated that John and his brother, Danny, had been in a physical altercation which led to John being shot in the side with a shotgun,” Singleton said.
He said Danny King allegedly fled the scene immediately in a Teal, 1999 Dodge minivan with Arkansas license plates, and lawmen initiated a manhunt.
“Hempstead County deputies, Hope police officers, Arkansas State Police troopers and neighboring law enforcement agencies were searching for Danny King, who was considered armed with possibly a 20-gauge shotgun and a small caliber handgun,” Singleton said.
He said officers received information that Danny King might have fled to the Delight or Antoine area.
“Danny King turned himself in to Hempstead County investigators at approximately 11 a.m. Sunday,” Singleton said. “He was taken into custody without incident, transported to the Hempstead County Detention Center and booked on Domestic Battery in the first degree and Aggravated Assault.”
He said two weapons, a 20-gauge shotgun and a 30-caliber carbine, were recovered during the arrest.
Singleton said the motive for the argument and subsequent shooting remain unclear.
“That is something the investigators are going to have to talk to the victim about,” he said.
John King was initially taken to Medical Park Hospital in Hope, then transported to Christus-St. Michael Medical Center in Texarkana, where he remained in stable condition Monday in the intensive care unit.
Singleton said John King reportedly underwent surgery Sunday in treatment of his gunshot wounds.
He said Danny King is expected to make an initial judicial appearance in circuit court today.
