Arrest in Dallas double killing

DESOTO, Texas – Capital murder charges have been lodged against a Dallas-area man in connection with the shooting deaths of two former Hope residents in September, 2009.
Bryan Chisholm, 33, of Sasche, Texas, was arrested by DeSoto, Texas, police and the U. S. Marshal's Service at his residence on May 6 in connection with the murders of Cedric Dewayne Johnson, 40, of Sasche, Texas, and David H. Perkins, 36, of Dallas, Texas.

Jury gives Gulley life in prison

A jury of six men and six women recommended and Eighth Judicial District-North Circuit Judge Randy Wright sentenced Michael Dewayne Gulley, 34, to life imprisonment without parole, plus a total of 45 years imprisonment on other charges Thursday in the shooting death of a Prescott woman and the shooting of another man.

Over $3,000 was raised at the “Boots and Badges” fundraiser here this weekend.
Local law enforcement and fire fighters held up boots and buckets in front of local supermarkets to collect money that goes toward the training programs for the Special Olympics.

Top of ballot not top interest

In an election supposedly heated by the top of the ballot where an incumbent U. S. Senator and Lieutenant Governor slugged it out for a runoff in a three-way race, Hempstead and Nevada counties voters paid more attention to local races; but, the numbers in Tuesday's primary elections reflected less than 50 percent turnout among registered voters.

Voters trickle to polls as election day dawns

Voters in Hope were trickling into the polls as balloting opened this morning in statewide preferential primary elections. Among the 10 precincts located at Hope Fair Park Coliseum, only 101 votes had been cast by 9 a.m.
In Spring Hill, among the largest rural precincts, only 90 votes had been cast at 10 a.m., according to Hempstead County Election Commissioner Scott Brown.
“Early votes take away a lot of those votes; but, it doesn't look like we are having the turnout we did two years ago,” Brown said.
Hempstead County Clerk Sandra Rodgers said that a total of 832 early and 234 absentee votes had been cast at the close of early voting on Monday. Rodgers said there are 10,884 registered voters in Hempstead County.
Polls will be open until 7:30 p.m.


Learning from Adversity; school shooting acted out in local play

Last week at Yerger Middle school, a hard working and talented group of students recently acted out a school shooting as part of a play which is scheduled to go on tour next year. The title of the play is “Out of Hope” .

Bomb found by Hempstead County road crew

Hempstead County road crew workers dug up a live 155 mm artillery round with a backhoe when attempting to put in a culvert Monday afternoon on Hempstead County Road 16 near Historic Washington State Park. Hempstead County Sheriff's Chief Deputy James Singleton said county road workers immediately recognized it was bomb and secured the area.

Highway improvements planned for county

More construction is on the way for Hope residents as the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department has opened bids for a project that will encompass constructing passing lanes on seven miles of U.S. Highway 29 between Hope and Lewisville.

FFa Rodeo kicked off Thursday results in

The 11th Spring Hill FFA Rodeo kicked off Thursday-Saturday March 11-13 at the Hope Fair Park Coliseum. Several students participated with a lot of support and crowd attendance. The money raised from the rodeo went to the FFA for banquet held at the end of the school year and other group functions such as contests and camps. All items from the concession stand sold out. The awards from the rodeo will be presented at the end of the year banquet in May. The rodeo started Thursday night with the ranch rodeo, then Friday and Saturday begin the students competition of 13 events. The All-Around Cowboy winner was Kade Ford and the All-Around Cowgirl was Candace Kidd.

Local and state law enforcement agencies will be on heightened status during two key sobriety awareness periods in March and April as the annual St. Patrick's Day observance approaches this week, and high school and college students begin spring vacations in mid-April.
