The weather seemed to play an interesting correlation to the situation of the lives of the largest graduating class at the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope. Storms, whether economic or actual, did not stop the 316 graduates, as the sun peeked out long enough to let the graduates shine along with it at commencement ceremonies held Tuesday evening at the Hope Fair Park Coliseum.

They were a group, according to UACCH Chancellor Chris Thomason, that “though the rainstorms pushed them inside” were not held back.
“Our state, our nation, and even our world, has been weathering a financial storm of unmatched intensity. That is why your success, which we are celebrating tonight, could not have come at a better time,” Thomason said.
He thanked and praised the group. He also thanked all those who supported and encouraged the graduates.

“I want to thank all of you, our graduates, for welcoming me over a year ago, as your chancellor, and allowing me to take part in your journey through education. It has been the most fulfilling professional experience of my life; to get to join you on that journey,” Thomason said.
Thomason who had experienced his first year as chancellor, talked about the accomplishments of the graduating class and the UACCH faculty throughout his first year.

“You are truly a historic group of students. You are special because you stood with UACCH as we demonstrated our full potential to all of Arkansas to add to this area’s prosperity. You all have dreamed with us, as to what UACCH could be as a campus, and then your did more than that. You went to work with us to make sure those dreams have become a reality,” he said.
He said the dedication of the students must continue.

“We need that dedicated contribution and we need it now. Remember the lessons that our grandparents’ generation taught us? The same lessons that gave that generation the well deserved title of the greatest generation. The American heart and the American mind can and has overcome every obstacle to our share of prosperity,” Thomason said.
Thomason said together, with the students, UACCH accomplished building wonderful buildings, forged lasting partnerships, and touched lives they never thought possible.

Dr.  B. Alan Sugg, president of the University of Arkansas System, commended UACCH faculty and the graduates on their accomplishments over the last year, with work done to pass the tax which will help fund the future Hempstead Hall auditorium and conference center.

Stacy Shupe, history instructor, was honored with the UACCH Outstanding Faculty Member Award. Dave Phillips was honored with the UACCH Spirit of Excellence Award. Outstanding alumnus was awarded to Clint Bailey.
