It is a good year for fireworks sales again in the area as local fireworks business owner Billy Rook said they are already as high as last year’s sales.

“It has been real good from the beginning. Sales have been where they were last year or better, and last year was the biggest season ever,” Rook said. “When the economy is bad and people are struggling, they are still going to have entertainment.”

Rook said last year gas prices were so high that people to chose to stay home and grill out and enjoy the Fourth of July at home, therefore, it was his biggest year.

A burn ban does not prohibit the use of fireworks, according to Rook. Hempstead County is currently under an outdoor burn ban.

Big sellers this year include colorful multi-shot items and artillery shells. This type of fireworks is loaded into a tube and shoots a colorful display, according to Rook.

“The fire chief said as long as people are cautious and do not allow a fire to be started from the use of fireworks, then we can all enjoy fireworks on the Fourth,” Rook said.

For those who do want to venture out, First United Methodist Church on Highway 29 South in Hope will hold a huge event, the Spirit of Hope celebration, on Saturday at 6 p.m. Bring your own bike and lawn chair for the concession stands, fireworks show, live music, and children’s bicycle parade. Everyone is welcome to the celebration.
