Multi-Dove and Grammy Award-winning recording artist, David Phelps is already familiar with Hope and Hempstead Hall, having both personal and professional connections to the area, so his Thursday, November 16 performance may seem more like a homecoming.
“My wife’s cousin is Jack Daniels, who has the Miracle Farms out in Bodcaw,” Phelps said during one of many phone interviews from Nashville that he had lined up Tuesday afternoon, “And, Jack has been my Musical Director for 19, close to 20 years now, so I know Hope and Hempstead County very well.”
Phelps has been married to Lori Purtle for over 20 years, and they have four kids – Callie, Maggie Beth, Grant and Coby – on their family farm outside Nashville, Tennessee.
“It will feel like a bit of a homecoming; I have lots of friends and family there, and I’ve performed at Hempstead Hall many times,” Phelps said.
In his latest appearance, Phelps will perform in a Seasonal Celebration concert event beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Although known as a leading voice in contemporary Christian music, Phelps said Thursday’s concert will be a mix of styles.
“Really, I am a little in between contemporary Christian and Southern Gospel, and during a concert, I also like to perform some traditional popular songs as well,” he said.
Thursday night’s Seasonal Celebration will somewhat reflect that mix as Phelps will perform a variety of both Hymnals and Christmas Carols as well as some newer Christmas selections from recent years.
“We all know these songs, traditional Christmas classics that everyone grew up with or sang along to. The evening will be about family fun, a celebration of faith, and inspirational music,” he said.
Phelps, known as a musical prodigy from Texas, will have plenty of help, packing along an eight-piece band and backup singers for the show. Although well-acclaimed as a singer, Phelps is also an accomplished piano player.
Phelps noted that many of the songs featured on Thursday night are included on his O Holy Night recording, as well as his recently released Hymnal recording.
“These are classic standards that people know like ‘Amazing Grace,’ ‘How Great Thou Art,’ ‘In The Garden,’ ‘Victory In Jesus’ and ‘It Is Well With My Soul.’” he said.
