Gerren “G-Man” Smith, sports editor of both the Hope Star and Nevada County Picayune, was honored by Athletes are Readers and Readers are Leaders organization on December 29 in a short ceremony at the Hope Star offices.

Gerren “G-Man” Smith,sports editor of the Hope Star and Nevada County Picayune, was honored by Athletes are Readers and Readers are Leaders organization on December 29 in a short ceremony at the Hope Star offices.
Roscoe Smith with Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church, praised Smith for his work with young and aspiring athletes through his career at the Hope Star. Smith was credited for being a positive role model for children and teaching them to respect their parents and others. Smith was awarded with a painting depicting him as a superhero.
Smith has been employed at the Hope Star for 10 years as sports editor, and he assumed sports reporting duties at the Star’s weekly sister newspaper, the Nevada County Picayune, in October.
Hope Star and Nevada County Picayune editor Rick Kennedy said, “Gerren has been an outstanding team player to work with at the Hope Star as well as the Picayune in my time here. He brings great enthusiasm and dedication our sports coverage, and he is a fine young person of great character and work ethic.”
“Gerren is one of the best community sports editors in the state, and he is a consummate professional, who loves high school sports.  I am proud for him in receiving this positive recognition, and I am proud to call him a trusted friend and fellow journalist,” Kennedy said.
