A noted Arkansas civil rights attorney from Little Rock will keynote of the annual Black Historical Development Society Martin Luther King Jr. celebration.
The celebration will be held at First Baptist Church in Hope, at Third and Main Streets, on Monday. The service begins at noon and will feature local talent as well as several dignitaries.
Representative David “Bubba” Powers and Senator Larry Teague will be in attendance, as well as performers Allan Batts and soloist Betty Pondexter.
Keynote speaker Austin Porter, a civil rights attorney from Little Rock, will present the theme speech. Porter studied at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and has worked with Hope native and Little Rock attorney John Walker, who is a Yerger High School graduate. Porter’s legal practice concern Equal Opportunity Employment and civil rights cases. He now has his private practice in Little Rock; is married, and has three children.
“The theme for this year’s event is ‘Make it a Day on, Not a Day off,’” BHDS President Vincent Wesley said. “We are also adhering to the truth of ‘Remember, Celebrate, and Act.’ Remember means remembering Dr. King; celebrate means celebrating his life, and act means acting on the principles he brought to other people.
“The Black Historical Development Society has partnered with the Corporation for National and Community Service,” Wesley said. “It’s the largest grant-maker for volunteer organizations in the nation. The corporation comes up with the theme each year.
“I want to volunteer my services on Monday, and throughout the year. There is so much negative news that I want to make a difference and make some positive news. Everyone can serve, whether it be visiting nursing homes, helping a neighbor, or helping at a soup kitchen. We all have something to give.”
The service will be open to the public.
