BLEVINS - A committee of faculty, administration and a school board member appointed by the Blevins Public School Board met recently to discuss options to prevent the closing of the Emmet school campus.

After an outcry from the Emmet community at the Blevins School Board meeting in November, the board proposed and accepted the idea of forming a committee to explore all options to prevent such an action.

“At this point the committee is not ready to announce any findings or any decisions. It would be very premature to do that,” Blevins Superintendent Randy Treat said recently.

Blevins school board member and past president Danny Lauterbach said that the board introduced the idea of closing the campus as an option to help the schools deal with financial stresses. Lauterbach wanted the public to understand it was not brought up by Treat.

“It is not his idea; he is just doing what the board asked him to do,” Lauterbach said. “Basically what we are trying to do is balance the budget. There will be no recommendations prior to April.”
The committee members include principals from all three schools, Billy Lee, Carla Narlesky and Pat Lowe. Other members of the committee are Lauterbach and Treat.

Lauterbach said Dr. Bobby Davis, from the Arkansas Department of Education, was asked to participate in the meeting to offer factual and financial advice.
“She offered some suggestions and everything she suggested we were already doing.  We had a productive meeting. We really did. We have to check on some laws and regulations, some of the legalities of some of the ideas we had,” Lauterbach said. “I promise we are going to exhaust every means possible to keep that campus open.”
