The Hope Ladycats had two fierce battles on the hardwood this past weekend in the Ashdown Sr. High Girls Classic basketball tournament. The Ladycats opened tourney play in a close match-up against Horatio Lady Lions. The Ladycats shine in the first quarter of action to take a 14-13 lead. In the second quarter, the Ladycats out-scored the Lady Lions 9-6 as Hope went into the locker room with a 23-19 advantage. In the second half, the Lady Lions poured 25 points into the basket as the Ladycats were held to 17. The Lady Lions went to victory over the Ladycats, 44-40 in their match-up. For the game, Ladycats' Jasmyne Farris led scoring with a season-high 22 points for double-figure scoring in her impressive play against Horatio. Oshiana Pree followed with six points, Bria Wesley scored four points, Nia Griffin, Jalisa Green and Ajah Criner all contributed two points apiece. In the second game of tournament play, the Ladycats fell short to the Genoa Central Lady Dragons, 34-29. The Ladycats kept their contest close in the first half to trail the Lady Dragons 15-12 at halftime. In the second half, the Ladycats posted 17 points, but the Lady Dragons poured 19 points. The Ladycats would get edged by the Lady Dragons, 34-29. For the game, Ladycats' Pree led scoring with 10 points for double-figures, Farris posted a nine point game, Green added three points and Wesley and Criner each chipped in two points. Head coach Susan Powers felt her Ladycats competed hard and believed facing Horatio and Genoa were good match-ups to prepare her team for the second half of the 2013-14 season coming up in January. The Ladycats will return for non-conference play on the road against Arkansas High January 7 in Texarkana. Then, the Ladycats continue more road action to open 5A South Conference hardwood at White Hall January 10. Their conference home opener at Jones Field House Gymnasium is January 14 hosting rivals' Magnolia Lady Panthers, then De Queen on January 21, 2014.
