  • Coming soon to Southwest Arkansas will be a professional basketball team giving numerous top ballers an opportunity to showcase their games and representing the state against some of the toughest talent in the nation. New to the Texarkana area and all surrounding communities, Texarkana Panthers are a new expansion team under the American Basketball Association. The Panther embody the philosophy of the ABA, which is promoting fun-filled, affordable basketball entertainment for the entire community. The entire Panther organization is extremely committed to the community, professionalism, good sportsmanship, and a high level of integrity both on and off the court. The Texarkana Panthers mission is to create a winning organization that makes a positive impact in the Texarkana Region through a Commitment to Excellence in the community, both on and off the court. The Panthers' organization are looking for players from Hope and surrounding communities to fill up this 15 man roster that are role models to reach out to the community to be asset to kids.This ABA team is for standout players of the ages 18 and above, with a parent consent for ages 18-21. Joining this ABA team expansion team allows individuals to explore talents to NBA scouts and as the season progresses along earning money being a player, while making a difference in the lives of youth. According to the ABA website, it all started with NBA legends' Julius “Dr. J” Erving and George “the Iceman” Gervin and the famed red white and blue basketball. These are among the worlds' best basketball players who came from this league. The ABA is the largest professional sports league in the U.S. When play begins next season, the league will have over 100 teams. It is also the most diversified professional sports league ever with over 75 percent of its teams owned by African – Americans, Hispanics, Asians and Women. The league provides opportunities for over 1000 players to play at the professional level and over 200 coaches to coach at the professional level. CEO of the Texarkana Panthers, Torrell Johnson, started the Texarkana Panthers organization as a way to provide positive opportunities for his community, which has played such an imperative role in his personal success. Mr. Johnson is from Waldo. President of the organization, Krystal Johnson, also from Waldo, believes that it is important to mentor the youth- teaching them that possibilities are endless. The organization understands the hardships of reality because we have faced them ourselves. This is why, they chose to bring a Professional Basketball team to this market.Tryouts are set up for the Texarkana Panthers. This Saturday, June 22 at Columbia Christian School in Magnolia, the Panthers are having a tryout from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Registration begins at 10 a.m. $150 non-refundable received on or before June 16-21 and $175 non-refundable payment on tryout day Saturday, June 22. If interested, a dance audition tryout is scheduled Saturday, June 29 at the Extreme Image Fitness Studio in Magnolia at 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Must be 18 years of age and those under 21-years-old need a parent consent. The season will get underway November through March 2014, with games played Saturday and Sunday. The organization are making developments to have games played here in Hope.
