Virginia D. Mayton, of Longview, Texas ,formerly of Hope, died Thursday, March 7, 2013, in Longview, Texas. Virginia Dare Mayton was born on August 28, 1918, to Donie and Jack Walton in Patmos, one of four children and 10 half-siblings. She married her love, Louie Augusta "Gus" Mayton, on Christmas Eve, 1938, unknowingly the same day as her dear brother Kelly Walton and sister-in-law Bea. She was blessed with two daughters- Sandra Mayton Reynolds, married to Jim Reynolds, and Gene Mayton Davis, married to Gordon Davis. She had the love of seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and honored by five namesakes. Virginia was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, and a fierce protector of her family and loved ones, including her siblings, nieces, nephews, and extended family. Her home was always our home and her table was the heart of it, always spilling over with the best country dishes and cornbread every day. No matter the time of day, she always had a place set and ready for anyone who came. Her pride was evident in her home and the care she took to make it perfect for all of us. She was the keeper of our many good times and memories, saving every card, school program, and childhood note. Church was always of most importance to her and many of our young memories are of sitting in her lap singing hymns, and attending Sunday school at the Church of Christ. She attended the Church of Christ her entire life, first in Patmos, then following in Houma, La., Hope, and Longview, Texas. She faithfully read her Bible every day and always kept it close. Visitation will be Monday, March 11, from 1-2:30 p.m. in the Herndon-Pharr Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, March 11, at 3 p.m. at graveside in Memory Gardens Cemetery, with Harold Freeman officiating, under the direction of Herndon-Pharr Funeral Home.
