Ellen Smith arrived on this earth on October 23,1915, with bright blue eyes. Angels came and escorted her to her new home in heaven on Sunday, January 20, 2013. Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth and her husband, Dwayne Dugal, Jennifer and her husband, Jimmy Baker; a niece who was like a daughter, Bertha Miller; two grandchildren, Mark Baker and wife, Dorothy, and Diane Miller and husband, Scott; five great-grandchildren, Matt Baker, Alex Baker, Rachel Miller, Aliza Miller and Hannah Miller; and a wonderful friend and special angel, Kay Chaney. Preceding Ellen in death were her husband of 43 years, Archie Smith; seven brothers, J.J. Byers, Earnest Byers, Orie Byers, Olin Byers, Derrel Byers, Howell Byers and Herbert Byers; a sister, Bertha Barr; and a great friend of many years, Jimmy Miller. She grew up in hard times and difficult situations but never let them dictate her spiritual life. She was a faithful Christian and participated in the church at New Hope and Shover Springs as a Sunday school teacher, Girls Auxiliary leader and church Secretary. She owned her own service station and expertly handled her money. She worked as a cosmetologist and bookkeeper. She knitted, crocheted, and sewed and made all her daughters clothing. She and her husband had a garden every year and sold produce to the local community. She was truly a Proverbs 31 woman. In difficult or stressful times, her words to us were, "Everything is going to be OK," accompanied by a reassuring smile. Today, she would say, "Everything is OK; I'm reunited with the love of my life, Archie and Jesus my Savior." Visitation will be Tuesday, January 22, from 6-8 p.m. at Herndon-Pharr Funeral Home. Services will be conducted Wednesday, January 23, at 3 p.m. at Shover Springs Baptist Church, with Bro. Eric Barbaree and Bro. Larry Byers officiating. Interment will follow in Shover Springs Cemetery, under the direction of Herndon-Pharr Funeral Home.
