  • Leita Spears Historic Washington State Park’s historian, spoke to members of the Rotary Club of Arkadelphia recently. Accompanied by Kerry Spears, her interpretive assistant, the two spoke about life in 19th century southern Arkansas and included  a hands-on view of many items that were common to that period, such as a fluter, waffle iron, wooden washboard, disposable clay pipe, rug beater, haversack, handmade candles, sun bonnet, beadle potato masher, ice tongs, wooden spinning tops, hand-rolled clay marbles, slate board slate pencil and other objects from the 1800’s. Historic Washington is a 19th century museum village that has interpretive guides for personalized tours where the items can be seen in context. Mrs. Spears also announced the annual Jonquil Festival, which will be March 15-17. For additional information, call 870-983-2862.
