The Blevins Hornets continue to make a huge statement thus far into the 2012-13 basketball season, as they're currently on a 10-game winning-streak for an impressive 21-3 overall record. The Hornets recently took care of business before the Christmas holiday break winning the 2012 senior boys Nashville Holiday Classic basketball tournament and staying unbeaten in conference action at 6-0. Prior to playing in the Nashville Classic, the Hornets pulled out a close and competitive road win over the Foreman Gators 44-34 for their final 7-2A West Conference game of 2012. The Hornets had a slim 9-8 lead over the Gators in the first quarter, but Blevins came out strong in the second quarter out-scoring Foreman 14-6. At halftime, the Hornets increased their lead over Foreman for a 23-14 advantage. In the second half, the Hornets out-scored the Gators 21-20 as Blevins went onto victory and remain undefeated in conference play. In the game, Hornets' Tank Woodley led scoring in double-digits with 16 points and River Kirkham posted 10 points. For Foreman, Adam Cody led all scorers in double-digits with 19 points. For Nashville Holiday Classic hoop action, the Hornets dominated the Fouke Panthers 66-37 in the boys semifinals. The Hornets maintained a 15-10 lead in the opening quarter, then Blevins out-scored the Panthers 14-11 in the second quarter. At halftime, the Hornets led Fouke 29-21. In the second half, the Hornets posted 15 points in the third quarter, then went bananas for fourth quarter scoring with 22 points and defensively held Fouke for 16 points scored in both quarters. In the game, Hornets' River Kirkham led scoring in double-figures with 14 points, Tank Woodley posted 13 points and D.J. Henagan added 10 points in the victory. For the finals, the Hornets faced off against Mineral Springs in a senior boys championship rematch from 2010 of the Nashville Classic. After falling to Mineral Springs in 2010, Blevins took care of business for 2012 and seek revenge defeating M.S. 57-34 to capture the tournament title. Blevins Hornets marched away with a 13-9 first quarter lead, then out-scored Mineral Springs 16-5 in the second quarter. At halftime, Blevins led Mineral Springs 29-14. In the second half, Blevins out-scored Mineral Springs 28-20 for a 23 point win. In the game, Hornets' Quincy McDaniel led scoring with 18 points and Montae Gentry added 12 points for double-figures. The Hornets will return to the hardwood for hoop action Monday, January 7 for an exciting conference showdown against Gurdon in the nightcap battle at the Imon G. Brown Gymnasium.
